Useful bathroom planning ranges
Current NZ published guidance separates basic professional bathrooms from mid-range and premium work. A straightforward full replacement may begin around $20,000, while tiled, layout-changing or premium bathrooms commonly move through the $30,000–$65,000 range and beyond.
The price depends on what is removed, what sits behind it and how much specialist labour the new design requires.
Why small bathrooms still carry substantial cost
A bathroom usually needs demolition, plumbing, electrical work, wall preparation, waterproofing, tiling, ventilation, fixtures and finishing. Many of those trades have minimum mobilisation and sequencing costs regardless of room size.
Moving a shower, toilet or vanity can require changes below the floor or inside walls. Full-height tiling and tiled showers add substrate preparation, membrane area and installation time.
Waterproofing and ventilation are not finish choices
Water management is part of the building performance of the room. The chosen system, substrate, junctions, falls and penetrations need to work together. Ventilation also needs to remove moisture effectively rather than simply make noise.
Ask who is responsible for the waterproofing system, what documentation will be provided and how plumbing and electrical work will be certified where required.
Price the room you actually intend to build
Provide fixture selections, tile extent, layout, heating, lighting, storage and ventilation expectations. State whether the quote includes demolition, disposal, repairs discovered after strip-out and painting outside the tiled areas.
If the existing room shows leaks, movement or poor ventilation, allow for investigation rather than assuming the new finishes can sit over the old problem.

Hidden moisture or substrate damage can change the work after demolition. Layout changes and extensive tiling are also major cost drivers that can be identified before work starts.
Can I keep the plumbing in place?
Often yes, and doing so can reduce cost and uncertainty. The existing pipework still needs to be suitable for the new fixtures and compliant work must be completed by the appropriate practitioner.
Should bathroom quotes include waterproofing?
A full bathroom quote should clearly state the waterproofing system, substrate preparation, area covered and who completes it. If it is excluded, identify exactly who will supply and warrant that package.
